Mission
Changing The Bronx Book Desert
Minimize the correlation between low literacy rates and high poverty statistics in the Bronx.
Loc’d and lit is a platform that we are using to foster a love of reading and bring awareness to the low literacy rates in the South Bronx. The South Bronx is a book desert, with only 1 brick and mortar bookstore for its 1.5 million residents.* We are doing our part to combat this issue through our literacy program, the launch of our online bookstore, and in our efforts to open a bookstore for all ages in the South Bronx.

Understanding The Problem
Loc'd & Lit is a community-driven bookstore and literacy movement founded by two lifelong Bronx friends who believe books have the power to connect, inspire, and transform lives. What began as a shared love of reading has grown into a mission to increase literacy, accessibility, and opportunity throughout the Bronx.
The need is urgent. Statistical reports consistently show that the Bronx has one of the lowest literacy rates among New York City's five boroughs, while nearly 70% of third graders living in poverty read below grade level. We believe there is a direct connection between literacy and economic opportunity, and that access to books, educational resources, and culturally relevant stories can help break cycles of poverty and expand possibilities for future generations.
As avid readers, we know firsthand how books can open minds, build confidence, strengthen vocabulary, and inspire dreams. That's why we're working to create a welcoming, inclusive bookstore and literacy hub where readers of all ages can discover books that reflect their experiences, explore new perspectives, and build a lifelong love of reading. We envision a space filled with books in multiple languages, community programming, book clubs, author events, and literacy initiatives that support both children and adults.
More than a bookstore, our future brick-and-mortar location will serve as a community safe haven—one that provides greater access to books for Bronx residents who have historically had limited bookstore options. We believe bookstores are essential community anchors, and that literacy is a powerful tool for community development. By increasing access to books and fostering a culture of reading, we hope to help create stronger educational outcomes, greater economic opportunities, and brighter futures for our fellow Bronxites.
At Loc'd & Lit, we're not just selling books—we're building community, celebrating culture, and helping write a new chapter for the Bronx.
