Hot Mama Summer Camp - Week 5 (St. Vincent Edition)
Aaaannnndd we’re back! Barely if I’m being honest with you guys, but I promised a full St. Vincent & The Grenadines travel blog post and here it is! Let’s jump right in shall we…
Now the reason we decided to visit St. Vincent is because the hubby’s family is from there and he hasn’t been back since he was a young child. Needless to say, a visit back to see the fam was way overdue. So when one of his cousins mentioned that they were planning a trip for this summer, we immediately decided to tag along and told her to add four more people to all of her travel plans to which she graciously obliged. (Seriously, a huge shout out to my husband’s amazing aunt and cousin because everything that comes next is courtesy of them and his cousin’s immaculate planning).
So we arrived on Wednesday, and after we settled in to island life and had a few days with some family activities in Biabou, (which is the village where the family is from), we started our St. VIncent exploration on Saturday with the The Black Point Tunnel in Byera Hill. Now even though it looks and feels like a natural cave, this tunnel was actually constructed by the British with the use of slave labor in about 1815 to provide for easier access routes and storage for sugar exports in the colonial days. I'm going to take this moment to say that even though all of the Caribbean islands are beautiful tropical paradises, there is no way to avoid the ugly past and stain that still lingers from those times. And I’m not gonna lie, it felt very eerie walking through the tunnel and knowing the cost and human lives that were sacrificed to build such a wonder. Plus, there is definitely a mournful egun energy that still remains, but it is still a sight to behold and I do recommend it as a must see.
The next day, we took a short boat trip from the mainland and went to Young Island for a huge family brunch and some beach time for the boys. The resort was gorgeous and we had a delicious buffet style meal. But I would recommend this place for couples. The vibe was very romantic and all of the dining options were in secluded cabanas. Oooh sexy…
On Monday, we hopped the ferry again had a day trip in Bequia. Now this was a very long day as we stopped by The Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary, Lower Bay Beach, and Spring View lookout point. We also had an amazing lunch at Mac’s Pizza & Kitchen where I had a delicious shrimp and pesto pizza that was easily one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had in my life…like ever.
The very next day we went hiking at The Vermont Nature Trail on the mainland. It’s honestly not a challenging hike, but for a beginner like me, I did find myself very winded the entire hike (but that’s a personal matter lol). Nonetheless, walking through the rainforest was such a beautiful and peaceful experience. Hubby’s cousin was our tour guide and I learned so much about the island’s natural history and how to spot different types of flora and fauna. I’m super proud of myself for making this hike and I hereby dub myself an intermediate hiker now. La Soufrière - I’m coming for you next…
But sadly, all good things must come to an end, and for our final day, I took the “bus” and went into town to do some souvenir shopping (an experience for sure). But all in all, the family and I had a BLAST in Vincy! We ate good, beached heavy, and made unforgettable memories with family. I definitely recommend this beautiful island in the eastern Caribbean and if you come, please make sure to go off the beaten path and explore some of the local culture when you can. Even though I’m a Nevis girl and Oualie will always have my heart, St.Vincent is a beautiful island too and I can’t wait to return.
Have you ever been to St. Vincent? Let me know your experience if you have and please tell us about your summer travel plans in the comments. Till next time - keep cool and always stay LIT!
